DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out.  \nOPW Kilkenny Castle is pleased to support our cultural partnership with Music in Kilkenny Concert Series once again. The concerts take place in different venues in Kilkenny throughout the season. The Parade Tower\, Kilkenny Castle is delighted to have hosted eight of these in 2025\, with the ninth and final one\, featuring the amazing Irish Baroque Orchestra\, due to place on Saturday 13 December at 7:30pm in the wonderful Picture Gallery of the Castle. \nJohann Sebastian Bach Christmas Oratorio BWV 248 \nFirst performed for Christmas in 1734\, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio comprises six cantatas\, each intended for performance on a feast day in the Christmas period. In this performance the Irish Baroque Orchestra and Chorus present all six cantatas\, for an immersive and enriching audience experience full of joy and peace. \nThe Christmas Oratorio performances are part of the IBO’s ambitious new Bach Cycle 2024 – 2026\, made possible by the generous philanthropic support of an anonymous donor.

The programme is available now at www.musicinkilkenny.org  \nKeith Pascoe – violin / Marja Gaynor – violin / Simon Aspell – viola / Ed Creedon – viola / Christopher Marwood – cello / Maria O’Connor – cello \nPROGRAMME & PERFORMERS\n\n\n\nLuigi Boccherini String Quintet in E major G.402 \nCharles Villiers Stanford String Quintet in F major Op.85 \nAntonin Dvořák String Sextet in A major Op.48 \nThe very last of well over one hundred string quintets written by the prolific virtuoso cellist Luigi Boccherini\, this charming work is characteristically refined and elegant. Dublin born Charles Villiers Stanford was a significant figure in musical life in the late 19th and early 20th century\, influential as composer\, teacher and conductor. His cheerful and uplifting F major string quintet was recorded by the Vanbrugh Quartet and Garth Knox in 2004 and features a lovely central slow movement inspired by sean-nós singing. \nDvořák’s A major string sextet is truly one of the treasures and great joys of all chamber music. Its gentle optimism offers a precious contrast to the difficulties and complexities of our modern world.

The new autumn schedule is available now www.musicinkilkenny.org \nThe Banbha Quartet was founded in 2020 and is made up of four of our most celebrated musicians who all work with orchestras in Ireland. They return for this\, their fifth tour for the National String Quartet Foundation. \nLidia is an award winning Polish violinist with an MA in performance from the Royal Academy of Music in London. \nKilkenny native Maria Ryan was leader of the Southbank Sinfonia in London for many years. \nRobin Panter was a member of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra who moved to Ireland to play with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. \nCellist Peggy Nolan frequently performs with Manchester Collective and the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

DESCRIPTION:National Play Day 2025 organised by Kilkenny County Council Community section in conjunction with the Department of Children\, Disability and Equality will be held on Saturday 5th July\, 2025. The event hosted by Kilkenny County Council and OPW will take place between 12 and 2pm in Kilkenny Castle Park. The event and all activities are free of charge and families are encouraged to come along\, enjoy the activities and make the event a great success. Along with event partners Healthy Ireland\, Creative Ireland and Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC) it will be a great opportunity to highlight and support the importance of creating time and space for families to have fun together.  The feedback from the various workshops held last year was hugely positive and the plan is to create an even bigger and better event this year.  Play Day supports and highlights the importance of creating time and space for families to have fun together. \nThis year’s theme is ‘The Power of Play’.  Play is vital to supporting children’s development\, learning and wellbeing. It encourages a sense of adventure and discovery\, helping young minds to better understand the world around them through fun and creative ways. This National Play Day is an opportunity for Kilkenny County Council and our partners to invite children and their families to come together in the grounds of Kilkenny Castle Park and take part in a wide range of activities for all to enjoy. \nActivities and workshops include magic shows\, intergenerational yoga\, storytelling\, giant games\, funfair stalls\, balance bikes\, friendship bracelet workshop and craft workshops.  There will be an activity area for children to enjoy the power of play!  Come along and enjoy\, it’s open to all and all activities are free of charge. \nThe workshops represent the wonder and discovery that unfolds when children play outside.  Access to outdoor play means children have many opportunities for developing their imagination and physical abilities. Playing in nature also presents opportunities for exploration and adventure. \nNational Play Day is more than just a day of fun\, it is a celebration of the fundamental role that play has in all of our lives. Play is essential for children’s physical\, emotional and cognitive growth. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to this FREE event.
