DESCRIPTION:OPW Kilkenny Castle is delighted to host the John Bradley Memorial lecture once again on Friday 27 October at the Parade Tower.\nThe speaker this year will be Gerard Crotty\, a retired teacher who has been interested in heraldry for many years.\n\nTalk: Making Sense of Heraldry :\nCoats of arms have been borne by families and individuals ever since they first appeared in battle and tournament in the twelfth century. As brightly coloured devices on banner and shield\, they served to distinguish one mail-clad knight from another. With the passage of time\, they became hereditary and can be seen today on monuments and as decoration in manuscripts\, stained glass and many other media\, where they can convey much information about the families who bore them.\n\nReception at Kilkenny Castle 6pm followed by talk 7pm\nConference Supper\, Club House\, Kilkenny\, 8.15pm (Optional) Lecture and Reception €15. DESCRIPTION:Kilkenny Castle is delighted to take part in Culture Night once more. \nTo celebrate Culture Night\, the period rooms and exhibitions of Kilkenny Castle will be open to the public free of charge from 6pm to 9pm on Friday 22nd September 2023. \nMusical guests\, duo Laoise O’Brien (Recorder) & Malcolm Proud (harpsichord)\, will entertain visitors with “Upstairs\, downstairs: popular tunes of the 16th & 17th centuries” in the stunning Picture Gallery from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. \nThis programme of staggered performances comprises melodies and songs that would have been familiar to all\, in settings that would have been heard in the highest echelons of society. Laoise and Malcolm Proud take us back in time as they explore the music that would have been popular both upstairs and downstairs in Kilkenny Castle. \nLaoise O’Brien is a musician and producer based in Kilkenny. She divides her time between her music production company and her career-long championing of the recorder. As a performer\, Laoise has appeared as a soloist and guest musician with numerous ensembles including the Irish Chamber Orchestra\, Irish Baroque Orchestra\, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland\, Resurgam\, Sestina\, The Irish Consort\, and Camerata Kilkenny. www.laoiseobrien.com \nMalcolm Proud is a harpsichordist and organist and performs regularly with the Irish Baroque Orchestra\, Camerata Kilkenny\, Resurgam and Sestina. His international career has included playing all six Brandenburg Concertos with Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s English Baroque Soloists at the BBC London Proms and at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival. DESCRIPTION:OPW Kilkenny Castle is once again delighted to host National Services Day at the Castle Park on Saturday 2 September 2023. \nKicking off at 1pm the city will see its second National Services Day Blue Light Parade and Static Display. \nThe parade starts on Castlecomer Road\, passing the Newpark Hotel\, McDonagh Junction\, John Street\, Rose Inn Street and then onto the Parade where they will then enter the grounds of Kilkenny Castle for a static display throughout the afternoon. \nAn excellent opportunity for the young and old to meet the men and woman of our national services and experience all the exciting equipment and vehicles they have to offer. \nNational Services Day is a celebration of Ireland’s frontline staff and volunteers and all are welcome to come along. \nFor more information on this event and those taking place around the country visit www.nationalservicesday.ie
